More than you ever wanted to know about word processors…

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

All modern flavors of Windows ship with Notepad and Wordpad.  For some, who prefer to keep things simple, these are all the writing or word processing applications that are necessary or needed.  Others will need more features and horsepower in a word processing application.

We like OpenOffice Writer as a free alternative to Microsoft Word.  The only problem with Writer is that you must install the entire OpenOffice suite to get it.  Another popular free standalone alternative is Abiword

The DonationCoder website recently posted a comprehensive review of modern word processing applications.  It was  written by Zaine Ridling, who runs The Great Software List.  The ending summary is linked here for those who wish to “cut to the chase”.

The Web Worker Daily blog has also recently posted an article listing 10 free minimalist word processors for greater productivity.  In their words, “if you don’t need a million features and don’t want to shell out 400 clams to write something, give one of these great alternatives a spin”.

We couldn’t have said it any better ourselves…

Free Services and Software for Business

Monday, June 25th, 2007

PC World columnist Richard Morochove writes:

Just because you manage a business doesn’t mean you have to throw money around. A penny-pinching business manager can access some useful services and applications with no financial outlay.

We took at look at 15 of the best business freebies. They handle everything from customer relationship management and e-commerce Web sites to e-mail accounts, customer mailing lists, and business management training.

Many entail nothing more than Internet access, a Web browser, and a few minutes of your time for user registration. Others require you to download and install some software to access their capabilities.

All are free. Some have paid versions that offer additional features and higher capacities.

There is really no reason for any small business not to have a web presence in this day and time.  Of particular interest is Microsoft Office Live Basics, which lets a small business establish an online presence by providing a domain name along with the capacity for managing a good-sized Web site and a couple of dozen e-mail accounts.

Google Apps for your Domain isn’t listed among the fifteen sites in the article, but it is a similar suite of easy-to-use tools for small business.

As always, if you need assistance putting any of these free tools or services to work for you, contact us!

More on botnets…

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Earlier this year, we blogged about botnets.  Today’s news headlines include an Associated Press article written by Lara Lakes Jordan titled FBI pulls plug on several botnet hackers.

Some excerpts:

“More than 1 million computers — possibly yours, too — are used by hackers as remote-controlled robots to crash online systems, accept spam and steal users’ personal information, the FBI said Wednesday.  The government has no way to track down all the computers, both in the U.S. and elsewhere, that hackers have massed into centrally controlled collections known as botnets.

FBI Deputy Assistant Director Shawn Henry said that people should have their computers checked regularly for evidence of botnet infection, including using antivirus software or security firewalls.  ‘People have their cars inspected once a year to make sure they’re safe,’ Henry said.  ‘You’ve got to do the same types of things with your computers.’”

Carputers specializes not only in malware removal, but in computer system hardening - taking proactive steps to make certain that your computer’s potential vulnerability is minimized.  This includes user training and awareness as well as anti-malware software and PC configuration.

Organize your digital photos with Picasa

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

It’s no secret that Picasa is our favorite photo cataloging and editing application.  We advise people all the time to uninstall the software that shipped with their digital camera and use Picasa instead.  Picasa pulls the pictures out of your digital camera or off of your flash memory device and makes it easy for even non-technical people to catalog, edit, manipulate, and share them.

Lifehacker’s Wendy Boswell has written an excellent guide on how to use Picasa to organize your digital photo collection.
